Article content Age: Not provided Ward: 1, 2, 3 Why are you running to be a school board trustee? I believe education is the most important investment we can make in our youth and communities. I grew up on my family's flue-cured tobacco farm, graduated from John McGregor secondary school, and earned an associate degree in agriculture from the University of Guelph, (Guelph campus). I understand first-hand how education can open doors and create opportunities. At this stage in my life, I have more time to give back and want to use my experience to contribute to the future of our students, families, and communities. What do you feel are important issues in education today? I have been following provincial education legislation, including the Putting Student Achievement First Act, which strengthens provincial oversight of school board budgets and also focuses on standardized classroom and curriculum standards. These changes may limit the role of trustees and local decision-making. I believe trustees need a meaningful voice because local communities understand their students and their unique needs. Declining enrolment and the possibility of school closures, particularly in rural communities, are also important concerns. Change may be inevitable, but decisions must be based on a holistic, long-term plan that considers demographics, transportation, community impact, and, most importantly what is best for students. Tough decisions should not be made piecemeal; they should be part of a thoughtful plan for the future.
