Islamabad-Peshawar M-1 Motorway To Close From Wednesday, September 23 Until Further Notice

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Sep, 2026) The National Highways and Motorway Authority has issued a traffic advisory announcing the closure of the Islamabad-Peshawar M-1 Motorway from Wednesday, September 23, until further notice. Islamabad Toll Plaza, Fateh Jang, Tarnol and Sangjani interchanges will also remain closed. According to Islamabad Police in a post on X, the Peshawar Motorway (M-1) will be closed to all types of traffic from 11 p.m. on September 23, 2026, until further notice. People travelling from the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, as well as other districts, have been advised to avoid travelling on the Peshawar Motorway (M-1) and postpone unnecessary journeys. In contrast, the M-2 (Lahore-Islamabad) Motorway will remain open to all traffic. Travellers have been advised to plan their journeys according to the traffic advisory and ensure compliance with the instructions of the traffic police. According to another post on X by the Motorway Police spokesperson, the M-1 Motorway's Islamabad Toll Plaza, Fateh Jang/Tarnol Interchange, Sangjani/AWT Interchange, Brahma Bahtar Interchange, Burhan Interchange, Hazara Motorway Interchange, Ghazi Interchange and Chachh Interchange will be closed from the evening of September 23. From the evening of Wednesday, September 23, 2026, the M-14 Motorway from Hakla to Kundal will be closed to all types of traffic in both directions. Hakla, Fateh Jang, Pindi Gheb, Kharpa, Tarap, Daud Khel, Kot Balian, Isa Khel and Kundal interchanges will remain closed. From the evening of Wednesday, September 23, 2026, GT Road N-5 will also be closed to all types of traffic in both directions at Attock Khurd. Meanwhile, Islamabad Police has sought a heavy contingent comprising 16,000 personnel from Punjab and 2,000 from Sindh to deal with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's long march. According to Geo news sources, Islamabad Police has begun implementing a strategy, in light of directions and orders from the Interior Ministry, to deal with the PTI's possible long march on September 27. Islamabad Police has requested 16,000 personnel from Punjab and 2,000 from Sindh for the purpose. Three deputy inspectors general, seven senior superintendents of police and 18 superintendents of police have also been sought from Punjab and Sindh. Media reports said the government had prepared a strategy to stop PTI protesters travelling to Islamabad from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including a decision to dig trenches on highways leading from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Islamabad. Media sources said trenches would be dug on GT Road to stop the protesting demonstrators. Trenches will be dug at 26 Number Chungi, Pirwadhai, IGP Road, Aswal Road and Katti Pahari. Barriers will also be erected on routes leading from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Islamabad. Labourers have been called in to dig the trenches, while soil bags are also being collected and will be placed in containers.
