Synopsis Retail vehicle sales surged by eighteen percent year-on-year, reaching 2.42 million units last month. For the first time, alternative energy vehicles, including electric and CNG options, outsold petrol vehicles. This increase in sales was primarily driven by strong rural demand, even with varied monsoon conditions. Electric vehicle category sales soared by nearly fifty-three percent, showcasing their growing appeal. Dealerships remain cautiously optimistic as the festive season approaches, anticipating higher bookings. Listen to this article in summarized format ANI Auto sales in August rise 18% on back of strong demand from rural markets Retail vehicle sales rose 18% from a year earlier to 2.42 million units last month, with all major segments of the market posting their best August volumes ever. Last month also saw sales of cars and utility vehicles powered by alternative energy sources such as CNG, electricity and hybrid power surpass petrol-fuelled passenger vehicles for the first time in India.Strong rural demand, despite many parts of the country facing deficient monsoon rains, boosted total sales, said the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), which collated the data from the government's Vahan portal. A low base also helped amplify the growth. Automobile sales were sluggish in August last year in the run-up to the GST rate cuts effective September 22. Automakers dropped prices to pass on the lower rates, triggering a sales surge. The benefit of base effect from comparisons with sales before the GST cut will start disappearing from this month. The numbers last month also reflected increasing preference of passenger vehicle buyers to alternative technologies and powertrains offering lower running costs amid high fuel prices. "The defining development of the month was a structural one," FADA president Sai Giridhar said, citing the higher share of vehicles running on alternative energy sources. While petrol still leads by a wide margin when compared with these alternative sources individually, its share is coming down. Over a year ago, petrol cars had a 11-percentage-point lead over the other sources combined. Dealers attributed the increasing shift in consumer preference to running-cost economics as well as continuing hesitation around the transition to ethanol-blended petrol, which is nudging buyers towards CNG, hybrids and electric vehicles. While a wide monsoon deficit-around 13%, with 14 states getting less-than-average rains-held tractor sales flat last month, the rural market outgrew urban in every other segment.Sales of PVs in rural markets rose 25% compared with 11% in urban centres. Commercial vehicles grew 16.33% in rural India (vs 12.79% in urban), while three-wheeler volume expanded 24% (vs a 7% fall in urban). In the two-wheeler segment, sales growth in the rural market outpaced urban by 20.25% to 19.07%. "Rural demand has begun to decouple from monsoon. The farm-income-linked segment softened, yet non-farm rural economy of livelihood mobility, goods movement and construction kept accelerating," Giridhar said. Retail sales of EVs across categories rose nearly 53% to 298,448 units, posting the best August sales, taking overall EV penetration to about 12.3% from 9.5% a year earlier. The share of electric two-wheelers also continued to rise, accounting for 10.68% of total two-wheeler sales compared with 7.7% in August 2025 and crossing the 10% mark in a non-festive month for the first time. In the commercial vehicle segment, too, the share of EVs in total sales rose to an all-time high of 5.18% from 2.06% a year earlier. Dealers are cautiously optimistic of demand in the coming month as festive booking pipelines are building. The widening monsoon deficit affecting rural enquiries, and the fresh round of vehicle price increases effective, though, remain a cause of concern.
