What Ohio State coach Ryan Day said ahead of the team's matchup against Texas

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State has gotten through its first game of the year, and now comes perhaps its toughest test of the season. The Buckeyes will head to Austin, Texas to play the Longhorns and in one of the more anticipated regular season matchups of the season. Here's everything coach Ryan Day said about the win over Ball State leading into this Saturday's showdown. - On the offensive line, Day said that there was, 'Some good, but some things we have to improve on.' He said they'd evaluate through the week and figure out if they have the right mix up front. - They are expecting Qua Russaw, who did not play against Ball State, to have a full week of practice this week. - Day said that these types of games are why recruits come to Ohio State or Texas. - On receiver Jeremiah Smith and getting him the ball: 'It's no mystery that when the ball is in his hands, good things happen.' When asked later, he said that you're trying to figure out how it all comes together when it comes to force him the ball and how Texas is going to try and defend him. - On the younger players playing against Texas, 'Right now it's, 'What gives us the best chance for us to win the game?' And then we go from there.' - On former Ohio State defensive tackle Hero Kanu: 'A tremendous person. When he was here, he made a lot of great friends and he did a lot in the community. Worked at a local restaurant here, someone who has a lot of talent as well and a good football player for sure.' - On Legend Bey's debut: 'I think that was probably expected...We're going to continue to bring him along as fast as possible because we all see what can be.' - On Zion Grady and Khary Wilder on the defensive line: 'You can see the juice, you can see the athleticism. Khary's a hard-charger. Zion's been two years in the program now and has shown really good versatility and consistency.' - On left tackle Ian Moore: 'Solid. A lot of movement, I think we've got some bigger challenges ahead with (Colin) Simmons and he knows that. But overall I would say solid.' - On Texas quarterback Arch Manning: 'When you think about that game last year between Julian and Arch, that was really their first games, to where they are now? Two totally different players in my opinion.' Day said that Manning has gotten better and better and can beat you with his legs and downfield. - When asked if he's starting from scratch despite playing Texas for the third year in a row, he mentioned the different schemes with coordinators and different personnel. - On the running game's improvement in the second half, he said, 'The running game was what we expected in the second half.' He said this is the team's first opportunity to show they can win a game on the road. - On the messaging with Sayin from last year to this year, he noted that you have to be aggressive but smart. 'We have to be on full attack mode.' He said that not every quarterback is the same in terms of development and being able to handle adversity is a big part of quarterbacking. - On what he learned from his team on Saturday: 'I don't know if there was a whole lot of things we learned -- it was good to see some of the throwing and catching early on.' He said he thought the defense played physical and ran to the ball. - 'The kickoff returns were a disaster, so we've got to get that fixed.' - On the Chris Henry Jr. touchdown, he said it was important to 'flush out' some of those mishaps. He said they haven't seen that in practice in terms of drops or mistakes from him. - On the Michigan/Western Michigan ending, Day said he hasn't been focused on that at all and it's all about Texas. He hasn't thought much about it. - On managing Texas' receivers: 'They get a chance on both sides -- when you look at their receivers and how dynamic they are -- they get to go against that in practice every day. It's not going to be this huge jump of talent that you can't catch up to early in the game.' - On the weather impact of the heat in Texas, he said it's the same for both teams and they'll have a plan. - Day said that kicker Connor Hawkins has experience with big kicks and he's responded well to being put in those positions in camp through the last month. - Day said that he thought Devin McCuin could have been a Chris Olave type of receiver when he first watched him on film. - On if he senses an excitement from his Texas-born players about this game, Day said that everyone is fired up to go play down there, but it'll mean a little something extra to them.
