Nearly 5,000 Ghanaians Repatriated from 10 Countries Since 2025

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa made this announcement. These repatriations are part of ongoing efforts by the government. Ghana's diplomatic missions and international partners assist citizens stranded abroad. Mr. Ablakwa noted that the figure includes Ghanaians from ten countries. The breakdown is as follows: 3,807 from Libya, 440 from Côte d'Ivoire, and 246 from Nigeria. Additionally, there were 244 from Cambodia, 201 from Algeria, and smaller numbers from Kuwait, Sierra Leone, Mauritius, Morocco, and Iraq. He stated that these recurring evacuations have created financial and logistical challenges for the state. Many situations requiring intervention arise unexpectedly. To address this issue, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the need for an emergency funding mechanism. He proposed establishing the Ghanaian Diaspora Consular Fund to respond more swiftly to crises involving citizens abroad. This fund aims to provide a sustainable source of emergency financing for the government. It will help mobilize resources quickly when Ghanaians are in distress. The proposed fund will also protect the rights and welfare of Ghanaians worldwide. Mr. Ablakwa urged caution among Ghanaians regarding illegal recruitment agencies and human trafficking networks. He highlighted that such schemes have led some Ghanaians into dangerous situations like the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Tragically, 62 Ghanaians have died in this conflict while another 15 remain missing. Additionally, two Ghanaians are currently held by Ukrainian authorities as prisoners of war. Negotiations for their release are reportedly progressing well. Mr. Ablakwa mentioned that the government is intensifying efforts against criminal networks involved in illegal recruitment and trafficking activities. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting Ghanaians abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue taking decisive action whenever Ghanaian nationals' safety is at risk.
