Albuquerque's Diego "The Nightmare" Sanchez is back in legal trouble only months after avoiding prison in a felony gun case. The former UFC fighter was arrested Monday afternoon in Socorro, New Mexico, on suspicion of aggravated driving while intoxicated and an alleged probation violation, according to KOB 4. Sanchez, 44, was booked into the Socorro County Detention Center at approximately 5:17 p.m. on September 7. Jail records list two counts against him: aggravated DWI and violation of probation. Authorities had not released additional information about the circumstances leading to the arrest as of Tuesday morning. It remains unclear why the DWI charge was classified as aggravated, whether Sanchez underwent alcohol testing or whether a vehicle collision was involved. One of the conditions of that sentence prohibited him from consuming alcohol, according to local reports. In July 2025, police arrested Sanchez after he allegedly fired a gun from the passenger side of a Jeep as it passed the scene of a traffic accident. Officers said they heard a gunshot and followed the vehicle before conducting a traffic stop. The former fighter initially denied firing the weapon but acknowledged that a gun was inside the vehicle. The driver reportedly told investigators that Sanchez had fired the shot into the air. Sanchez was initially charged with shooting at or from a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony, and negligent use of a deadly weapon. He pleaded guilty in February to the felony charge, while the second count was dismissed under a plea agreement. Prosecutors asked the judge to impose two years in prison, citing Sanchez's "reckless actions when he shot the firearm out of the car window." The judge instead sentenced him in March to five years of supervised probation and 800 hours of community service. After the sentencing, Sanchez said he was taking responsibility for his behavior and had begun treatment connected to a bipolar disorder diagnosis. "All I can do is take accountability, own it, and spread positivity for the youth of the next generation to change these ways, man," Sanchez told reporters outside the courthouse. "Not to be shooting out windows like cowboys." His attorney, Max Pines, said at the time that Sanchez had voluntarily addressed some of the underlying issues involved in the case. "We were pleased that Mr. Sanchez will not be serving any time on this case," Pines told TMZ Sports. "He can prove himself on supervised probation." The new arrest could test that opportunity. A judge will determine whether Sanchez violated the terms of his probation and what consequences, if any, should follow. He made 32 appearances in the UFC, winning 19 of them, and challenged B.J. Penn for the lightweight championship in 2009.
