FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki says developers cannot make something fun by following the same old rules. This comment was made in reference to the studio's habit of changing its design ideas across Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring, etc. The team typically makes games that it finds interesting as opposed to sticking with a single formula. FromSoftware is easily among modern gaming's biggest studios, and for good reason. As the team behind hit titles like Elden Ring, Sekiro, Bloodborne, and more, the studio is now gearing up to release The Duskbloods. This entry takes a completely different approach with multiplayer gameplay and shows FromSoftware's more experimental side. In fact, the studio's CEO believes variety and interesting ideas are core to the studio's philosophy when it comes to making games. Why it matters: Many teams don't take risks today due to the nature of AAA development. FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki follows an entirely separate philosophy of game development. Speaking to The Guardian, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has said that repeatedly making the same kind of game can become stale, arguing that fun comes from changing the rules rather than sticking to a familiar formula. The developer notes that FromSoftware itself does not have a fixed formula for making its games. Instead, the team usually starts with ideas it finds interesting and moves forward with that in mind. That is exactly why games like Elden Ring Nightreign and The Duskbloods have recently delved into multiplayer gameplay. Similarly, other titles like Sekiro have shown FromSoftware taking on stealth gameplay. The team even experimented with first-person gameplay all the way back with Demon's Souls. Although similarities exist between these titles, FromSoftware makes sure to bring something interesting to the table with each new release. There's no intentional FromSoftware mantra. If you start to do that it becomes stale and conservative. The Duskbloods Is Focused on Multiplayer Gameplay Moving forward, it will be interesting to see where FromSoftware goes from here. The Duskbloods has proven to be quite divisive, but Hidetaka Miyazaki intends to make more single-player games in the future as well. What do you think about FromSoftware's approach to game development? Let's discuss in the comments below. [Editor-in-Chief] Sajjad Hussain is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Tech4Gamers.com.
