OpenAI makes major pledge on data center power costs after voter backlash
On Thursday, OpenAI recommitted to covering the full cost of powering data centers as part of a sequence of obligations the company announced today-two days after voters at the polls categorically declined the rapid expansion of AI.
The artificial intelligence company declared that its official commitments concerning its owned and operated data center facilities, it will publish construction plans and refrain from the use of confidential secrecy agreements.
OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane stated in a Wednesday briefing. ' What we're doing with this blueprint is really laying out the best lessons that we have learned and committing to applying them as they go forward.'
'This will help ensure that there is a very high floor in terms of how people move forward.'
Meanwhile, consumers grappling with inflation, increasing grocery prices and high prices at the pump grew concerned that the facilities could compound environmental harms, elevate utility bills and result in job loss.
OpenAI has continually vowed to safeguard utility customers and support regional development this year, maintaining that the company's new frameworks capitalize on previous achievements. A company spokesperson said the policy framework has been under development since August, and he has conferred with dozens of lawmakers and candidates since then.
OpenAI Chief Global Affairs officer Chris Lehane said: 'Having these conversations now actually helps put more energy into the momentum, so that when people come back in late January, a new Congress is in session, a lot of the work is being done in advance.'
