Nominations open for municipal election : My North Now

Nominations are open for the upcoming Yellowknife 2026 municipal election. Nominations open at 9:00 am on September 8 and will remain open until 3:00 pm on September 21. Nomination packages are available on the City of Yellowknife website, as well as at the Office of the Returning Officer. To be a valid candidate, an individual must be a Canadian citizen over the age of 18, who has resided in Yellowknife since at least October 19, 2025, and is not disqualified by the Local Authorities Elections Act. Nominations need to be completed and filed with the Returning officer by the cut-off date and need to be signed by two eligible Yellowknife voters, as well as witnessed by a Commissioner for Oaths for the NWT, Notary Public, or the Returning Officer. Voters in Yellowknife will need to ensure they are on the voters list by October 9. Voters can check or update their registration on the Elections NWT website. To be eligible to vote, residents need to be Canadian citizens over the age of 18, who have resided in Yellowknife since at least October 19, 2025. The election will take place on October 19, 2026, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, with polling stations at Weledeh Catholic School, the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre, École Įtłʼǫ̀, the Multiplex, and Range Lake North School. Voters who are unable to vote on the election day can place their vote at the Office of the Returning Officer from October 5 to October 16, between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. Residents will be able to vote for the City's Mayor as well as eight councilors for the 2026 to 2030 term this year.
