ABVP wants MCD commissioner out

New Delhi: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) demanded the resignation of the MCD commissioner over the Satya Niketan building collapse, as its members allegedly vandalised parts of the civic centre during a protest, officials said. According to the police, around 150 to 200 ABVP members gathered at the MCD headquarters on Sunday to protest against the functioning of the civic body following the building collapse, which resulted in seven deaths and several injuries. Officials said the protesters entered the civic centre through gate No 5 and staged a demonstration outside the main building, raising slogans and demanding accountability from the MCD. During the protest, some demonstrators allegedly vandalised parts of the MCD office and attempted to force their way into the main civic centre building. This led to a confrontation between the protesters and police personnel, according to a senior police officer. Police detained around 15 students and took them to the Kamla Market police station, where action under the Delhi Police Act was initiated, the officer said. The remaining protesters were subsequently dispersed, and the situation was brought under control, police said. The ABVP, supported by the RSS and BJP, is one of the largest student organisations and political groups in the country. It currently holds three key positions in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU), including the presidency.
