Rutgers Football to start AJ Surace in game two versus Boston College

Rutgers Football has turned to a new signal-caller for Week 2. Third-year quarterback AJ Surace has been named the starter for Saturday's matchup against Boston College, the program announced. Surace will make the first start of his career against the Eagles on September 11th at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Dylan Lonergan and Surace battled all offseason for the starting job, with Lonergan ultimately winning the competition and getting the nod in the opener against UMass. But late in that game, Lonergan went down with an injury and did not return. Before exiting, Lonergan completed 16-of-29 passes (55.2%) for 242 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions and a lost fumble. Surace, stepping in for the final series, was sharper in limited action, going 6-of-9 (66.7%) for 77 yards and a touchdown. Surace enters this weekend with little experience to lean on. As a sophomore in 2025, he appeared in just two games behind starter Athan Kaliakmanis, completing 4-of-9 passes for 58 yards. Now he'll face his first real test under the brightest of lights — and in one of the sport's most emotional settings. Boston College will host its annual Red Bandana Game, honoring former BC lacrosse player Welles Crowther, who died on September 11, 2001, after saving at least a dozen people during the World Trade Center attacks.
