Dual-platform quantum hardware vendor D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NASDAQ: QBTS) has executed a definitive agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce for up to $100 million in federal research and development funding under the CHIPS and Science Act. Following the execution of a initial Letter of Intent, the finalized award provides direct capital to accelerate hardware scaling across both superconducting quantum annealing and gate-model processing architectures while expanding domestic fabrication and supply chain capabilities. The capital allocation targets explicit physical and logical scaling milestones for D-Wave's dual-platform roadmap. For annealing architectures, funding will accelerate R&D for a next-generation 100,000-qubit system engineered for complex combinatorial optimization, artificial intelligence, and material simulation workloads. For gate-model architectures, the award supports the development of a 10,000-physical-qubit QPU designed to host 100 fault-tolerant logical qubits capable of executing over 1,000,000 circuit operations for quantum chemistry and industrial quantum AI. As a mandatory condition of the final award structure, the U.S. Department of Commerce will receive a minority, non-controlling equity stake in D-Wave Quantum Inc. through a share issuance agreement. This transaction represents part of the broader federal program allocating $2 billion across nine quantum hardware and foundry developers to establish domestic quantum semiconductor manufacturing sovereignty.
