Vehicles carrying Ganesh devotees travelling to the Konkan region for the upcoming festival will be exempted from toll payments, the Maharashtra government announced today, September 8. The toll waiver will remain active from September 11 to September 27. It applies to plazas along the Mumbai-Bengaluru National Highway (NH 48), the Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH 66), and other designated routes leading to Konkan.
Special Passes and Transport Arrangements
Additionally, vehicles commuting to the region via the Atal Setu will also be eligible for the exemption. To streamline travel during the festive rush, devotees can obtain special adhesive stickers or passes bearing the inscription "Ganeshotsav 2026 Konkan Darshan". These passes will be available at local police stations, traffic police posts, and Regional Transport Office (RTO) locations, and will remain valid for both onward and return journeys. In addition to private vehicles, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses operating from various districts toward Konkan for Ganeshotsav have also been cleared for the toll exemption.
Annual Migration Context
Every year, hundreds of thousands of residents living in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and other urban centres across Maharashtra travel to their native towns and villages in the Konkan belt to celebrate Ganeshotsav. The annual road migration often leads to heavy congestion at major toll checkpoints, making the temporary waiver a crucial step in easing transit for festival-goers.
