This fund will provide emergency support to Ghanaians in distress abroad. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced this initiative on September 9. He spoke during a press briefing about the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa. Mr. Ablakwa stated, 'The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will soon launch a Ghanaian Diaspora Consular Fund.' This fund aims to respond quickly to Ghanaians in crisis situations worldwide. The announcement follows the evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa. This action was taken amid rising concerns for the safety of foreign nationals. According to Mr. Ablakwa, the evacuation was unplanned and not budgeted for. However, the government acted to protect Ghanaian lives as conditions worsened. He emphasized the government's commitment to safeguarding Ghanaians abroad. The state will take 'timely and decisive action' when citizens' safety is at risk. Mr. Ablakwa praised Ghanaians for their solidarity during recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. He noted that unity leads to significant achievements. The evacuation operation ran from May 27 to September 4. It involved collaboration among various state institutions, including the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria. The first flight prioritized vulnerable groups such as children and women.
