Donald Trump Shares Eye-Catching New Map With One Huge Change

Donald Trump has given social media another glimpse at his vision for America's territory. The U.S. president, who has repeatedly floated ideas about changing place names and expanding American control, shared the striking map on Labor Day with several countries shown under the U.S. flag. Just a day earlier, he appeared to suggest changing the name of New Mexico to 'New America.' A Truth Social image showed 'Mexico' crossed out on a map of the state and replaced with 'America.' Trump also posted that many people had suggested changing the state's name to 'NEW AMERICA.' Trump has also pushed to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America.' 'We're gonna make a little change, we're gonna call it something different than Lake Ontario,' the president said in an Aug. 26 clip posted to TikTok ahead of the name change. 'We're gonna call it Lake America. And all it takes is a good pen and some intelligence.' He then used a Sharpie to cross out the lake's name and write 'LAKE AMERICA' above it. However, Trump does not have the authority to unilaterally rename New Mexico. The state has used its current name since before joining the U.S. in 1912, and the federal government lacks the authority to change a state's name on its own. Trump has also ordered the federal government to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America.' His interest in expanding U.S. territory has also repeatedly centered on Greenland, the self-governing territory of Denmark. Trump has argued that the Arctic island is important to American national security. With the latest map, Trump has once again used a visual to depict an expanded version of the United States, adding to his repeated public comments about changing place names and territorial boundaries.
