Crosby says extension talks underway with Penguins: ‘I'd like to continue playing for a number of years'

Sidney Crosby said Tuesday that extension talks are underway with the Pittsburgh Penguins, though finding a term is a difficult proposition as he weighs his future. The 39-year-old future Hall of Famer is entering his 22nd NHL season with the Penguins and last of a two-year, $8.7 million extension signed in 2024. 'Pat 's talking to Kyle ,' Crosby told reporters at the NHL/NHLPA media tour in Las Vegas. "It's just a little bit more difficult at my age as far as trying to project where you're gonna be. '… I'd like to continue playing for a number of years. It's just I don't know what that number is. I guess your mind and body tell you that eventually. Right now I feel pretty good, though. ' Being over the age of 35, if Crosby were to retire before the end of his next contract, the Penguins would be left on the hook for his cap hit. Crosby posted 29 goals and 74 points in 68 games last season. He added a goal and five points in six playoff games before the Penguins were eliminated in the first round. He also contributed two goals and six points in four games at the Olympics on February before suffering a tournament-ending knee injury that kept him out of Canada's gold-medal game loss. Drafted fist overall by the Penguins in the 2005 draft, Crosby is among the NHL elite, recording 654 goals and 1,761 points in 1,420 career games. His 1,761 points is first all-time in Penguins franchise history and is only 10 points behind Marcel Dionne for sixth all-time in NHL history. Crosby is a three-time Stanley Cup winner in 2009, 2016, and 2017, winning two Conn Smythe Trophies in the process. He has won everything there is to win during the NHL regular season, picking up two Hart Trophies , three Ted Lindsay Awards , two Maruice 'Rocket' Richard Trophies , and two Art Ross Trophies
