According to the state broadcaster, the two leaders held detailed discussions on the country's political situation and other matters of national importance.
The prime minister briefed the PML-N president on the law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and recent initiatives undertaken for the province's development and prosperity, Radio Pakistan added.
The federal government has imposed emergency and governor's rule in KP since October 11, citing the provincial government's 'deliberate disengagement' from the fight against terrorism. The new administrative setup, led by Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, has identified strengthening counterterrorism measures as its top priority.
Both Prime Minister Shehbaz and his elder brother Nawaz have defended the decision to impose emergency rule, with the premier maintaining that the federal government had been 'compelled' to take the step due to security concerns, while the PML-N supremo argued that the intervention should have come much earlier.
The prime minister also apprised Nawaz Sharif of the government's ongoing economic reforms, the challenges confronting the country and the measures being taken to address them, the state broadcaster said.
The two leaders also held detailed consultations on national political affairs and measures aimed at improving the country's economy, Radio Pakistan reported.
