Andrew Garfield's New Movie Is Officially One Of His Longest Movies In The 21st Century

Andrew Garfield's new movie, Artificial , may require a large popcorn and a drink, given its runtime. The Oscar-nominated actor will portray OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in the upcoming biographical comedy, which covers his controversial firing and rehiring in 2023. The cast also features Monica Barbaro, Yura Borisov, Mark Rylance, and Ike Barinholtz, while Garfield reunites with director Luca Guadagnino. Now, ahead of Artificial 's world premiere at the New York Film Festival next month, the runtime has been revealed. For Garfield, the movie will be his fourth-longest behind Silence (161 minutes), Spider-Man: No Way Home (148 minutes), and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (142 minutes). Meanwhile, Artificial will be the director's second-longest movie ever, behind Suspiria (152 minutes). Despite the official runtime, Artificial doesn't have an official release date after Amazon MGM Studios dropped the movie in June 2026. The announcement drew backlash, given the coincidental timing of Amazon's $50-million partnership deal with OpenAI. The brand didn't explain the reason, but some outlets and insiders drew the unexpected withdrawal to an unflattering portrayal of Altman and Elon Musk. There were also reports that Artificial received poor test scores, as the movie searched for a new distributor. By the end of June, Neon acquired the distribution rights to the movie and planned to have it released in time for the upcoming award season. Meanwhile, Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera told The Hollywood Reporter that Neon doesn't plan a wide release until early 2027, but was considering a December limited run. However, it was revealed that Artificial, which had a $40 million budget , would have its world premiere at NYFF in October, followed by a Gala screening at the BFI London Film Festival.
