New details emerge in deadly shootout between suspect, Canby police

CANBY, Ore. — The Canby Police Department released more details about the deadly confrontation between a suspect and police officers at a local apartment complex last week. Police were called to the Sequoia Grove Apartment Complex around 10:30 p.m. last Thursday for reports that a man, later identified as 34-year-old Mario Mendoza Jr., was trying to force his way into one of the apartments. More in Crime When officers arrived, they attempted to detain Mendoza in the parking lot, only for him to run away. During the chase, Mendoza drew a handgun and shot at the officers, according to the latest report. Allen Miller, returned fire and struck Mendoza. Medical personnel pronounced Mendoza dead on the scene. Residents told KGW they were surprised the shooting happened at the complex, describing it as a safe area with many young people living there. Because Canby police officers were involved in the shooting, the ongoing investigation is being led by the Lake Oswego Police Department and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office in coordination with the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team. Nelson has been with the department since 2016, and Miller has been with the department since 2017. Both officers have been placed on paid leave.
