Wall cracks, floor subsidence at Gzb school building just 7 years after handover

Ghaziabad : Just seven years after it was handed over to the education department as a campus for Govt Girls' Inter College building in Ghaziabad's Premnagar, the building has developed deep structural problems. Cracks are visible across classroom walls, and the floor has seen subsidence with tiles broken, and dampness has spread across sections of the walls, becoming a safety risk for the more than 200 students studying in classes IX to XII at the school. The Premnagar building was constructed under Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) by the minority affairs department through Construction and Design Services (C&DS) and handed over to the secondary education department in 2019. The condition of the building came to light during an inspection by a team of chief development officers (CDOs) along with the Loni SDM on Saturday, who also reviewed teaching-learning arrangements, student attendance, cleanliness, drinking water facilities, toilets and other basic amenities at the school. Classes are still being conducted at the school. Sources said that the cracks developed nearly a year ago and have gradually been increasing since. A former principal at the school also sent letters to authorities regarding the situation but no action was taken at the time. 'The construction agency concerned has been directed to appear at office this week, with the complete construction file and other relevant records for a review of the circumstances leading to the building's condition. Once the details are collected, a budget estimation will be made and new construction will begin immediately. Alternative arrangements for the students will be made meanwhile,' said Ghaziabad CDO Kumar Saurabh. Loni Municipal Council has been directed to prepare an estimate for repair and improvement work at the school, and officials were instructed to prioritise student safety and take precautions in the damaged portions of the building to prevent any untoward incident. The Premnagar school was one of two new govt inter colleges sanctioned in Loni, with more than Rs 6 crore approved for the two buildings. Though they were handed over in 2019, classes could not begin during the pandemic. The boys' school building in Mustafabad later became dysfunctional after doors, windows and other fittings were allegedly stolen, prompting the education department to begin conducting boys' classes at the Premnagar school from the 2023-24 academic session. The single-storey Premnagar building, which has only four classrooms, was thus made effectively co-educational — one classroom allocated to boys and the remaining three to girls — as a temporary measure while the Mustafabad boys' school awaited renovation, for which the department had earlier sent a proposal of around Rs 1 crore to the state govt.
