Khewra Salt Mine reopened for tourists after seasonal maintenance

JHELUM: The Khewra Salt Mine has been reopened for tourists after a three-week closure for required maintenance. Malik Muhammad Naeem, the manager of the Pakistan Minerals Development Corporation at the Khewra Salt Mine in Jhelum district, confirmed to Dawn that the mines had been reopened for visitors after being closed on August 11. According to the officer, the entry of visitors and tourists was closed until the end of the monsoon season as the water level in the ponds inside the mine had surged due to heavy rains and moisture in the air. Mr Malik confirmed, in response to a query, that the mine was safe and had been reopened after the monsoon season, with the required maintenance, scaling and pumping out of surplus accumulated water completed. 'Now the tourists are most welcome to visit the venue,' Mr Malik added. It is pertinent to mention that the Khewra Salt Mines in Jhelum district are the world's second-largest treasure of pink salt and attract thousands of tourists from Pakistan and abroad daily.
