Students remember Khalra with Sukhmani Sahib recitation

Chandigarh: Students and members of youth organisation SAAKHI Sunday organised a recitation of Sri Sukhmani Sahib to mark the martyrdom anniversary of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra and offered prayers for the well-being of humanity. Paying tribute to Khalra, the organisation recalled his efforts to document alleged cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings during Punjab's militancy years. Speakers described Khalra as an enduring source of inspiration for young people raising issues related to Punjab and the Panth. They said his work helped draw attention to families seeking answers about those who allegedly disappeared during the period. Members said Khalra's legacy extended beyond the human rights discourse and continued to resonate with sections of Punjab's youth. They also remembered his efforts to challenge the state machinery and highlight alleged human rights violations. SAAKHI said it remained committed to working for the welfare of humanity and issues concerning the Panth and Punjab. Khalra, who investigated cases of alleged illegal cremations and disappearances in Punjab, was abducted in Sept 1995 and later killed. His work remains a significant reference point in discussions on human rights and accountability in the state.
