Mexico. Sheinbaum Responds to Trump's Map: 'Mexico Is Not a Colony of Any Country'

As part of the celebrations for the Month of the Fatherland, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo responded to the provocations of U.S. President Donald Trump with a strong and clear message reaffirming Mexico's independence and sovereignty Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Monday that Mexican territory 'is not and will never be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country', after U.S. President Donald Trump posted an image featuring a map in which Mexico, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and some Caribbean islands are shown covered in the colors of the U.S. flag. The head of state's response comes amid events leading up to the commemoration of Mexico's independence. Sheinbaum reiterated that Mexico is a 'free, independent, and sovereign country' in the face of recent provocations by Trump, who also posted on social media a map in which he refers to the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America'. The U.S. president posted another image on social media of the state of New Mexico, in which he crossed out the second word and wrote 'America' underneath it. The image, also shared by the White House on X, was released days after Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario—one of the Great Lakes on the U.S.-Canada border—as 'Lake America'. Last week, the White House occupant also lashed out at Mexico, claiming that the country has nothing to offer the United States other than 'spicy tamales and tomatoes,' while warning that he would not sever trade ties with the neighboring nation. In 2025, Trump used an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, and he recently suggested that the Strait of Hormuz in Western Asia—through which 20% of the world's oil passes—should be renamed the 'Trump Strait'.
