Hy-Vee planning new grocery store in western Lenexa

A popular grocery store chain has submitted plans to build a location in a growing part of western Lenexa. Hy-Vee submitted preliminary plans to build a new store in on about 32 acres of land, near 83rd Street and Kansas Highway 7, according to pending applications on the city's website. If approved, it would be constructed at 22939 W. 83rd St., near Freedom Fields baseball fields and Westside Family Church. The plans include 93,000 square feet for the Hy-Vee supermarket, as well as a Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh location, office, banking and retail space. The proposal will likely be taken up by the Lenexa Planning Commission on Oct. 5, city spokesperson Denise Rendina said. Hy-Vee and developer Greg Watson did not return requests for comment from the Johnson County Post. The project will be built on 32 acres of land Included in the plans are: A 93,000-square-foot Hy-Vee supermarket with 489 parking stalls A 5,000-square-foot Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh location A 3,700-square-foot banking/retail location 2 2-story office space buildings, ranging from 44,000 to 50,000 square feet 4 retail or restaurant spaces, ranging from 1,800 to about 18,000 square feet Because the plans are preliminary, they are likely to change, Rendina said. The location would be the second in Lenexa. Its first location in the city, at the Westchester Square Shopping Center in the eastern part of the city, is part of a planned $26 million renovation project for the plaza approved by the Lenexa City Council in July. The location is going into a growing part of the city The location follows continued expansion into the western part of the city. In the past five years, it has seen a number of new developments, including The Reserve at Copper Creek, Canyon Ridge Apartments and Hedge Lane Residential. During the groundbreaking for The Reserve at Copper Creek, Oak IQ CEO Aaron Leatherdale noted the expansion of western Lenexa in December 2025. 'With Lenexa City Center already kind of getting built out and being very dense there, we're seeing a lot of people kind of move out this way,' he said.
