Bulgari's ‘Kaleidos' Exhibition Travels to Shanghai

Bulgari has taken its color-obsessed traveling exhibition to Shanghai's Power Station of Art, which brings together more than 300 jewelry creations, staging a colorful dialogue between Italian and Chinese culture. Dubbed 'Bulgari Kaleidos: Colors, Cultures and Crafts,' the latest stop of the exhibition will run until Oct. 31 and is open to the public. Ranging from one-of-a-kind high jewelry pieces to archival designs from the Bulgari Heritage Collection and works on loan from private collections, the jewels are set in dialogue with new commissions from Chinese artists including Liang Manqi and Zhangding, who translate Bulgari's chromatic obsessions into immersive installations. 'At Bulgari, color has always been a universal language transcending borders, cultures and time,' said Laura Burdese, Bulgari's chief executive officer. 'With the Shanghai chapter of Kaleidos, we are honored to continue this journey, this time through a dialogue with China's rich cultural heritage and artistic expression. By bringing our chromatic vision into conversation with local perspectives, this exhibition reveals color's unique power to connect, to inspire and to continuously reinvent itself,' added Burdese. Unveiled via three chapters, titled The Science of Colors, Color Symbolism, and The Power of Light, the exhibition introduces new perspectives on Eastern and Western visions of color through the chromatic creative universe of the Rome-based jeweler. Western color theory, from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to Michel Eugène Chevreul, is presented alongside Eastern frameworks such as the Chinese five elements system, or Wu Xing in Chinese. In Shanghai, the fine art component is pushed even further. Liang Manqi, known for geometric abstraction, presents an installation in which painting spills off the canvas and onto walls, floors and three-dimensional structures. Zhang Ding, a key figure in Chinese contemporary art, contributes a piece composed of golden light panels that casts an almost sacred glow, illuminating transparent glass humanoid heads with gemstone-like surfaces. Bulgari celebrated the exhibition opening of the exhibition with a gala dinner and showcased its new high jewelry collection 'Eclettica.' Celebrity guests included brand ambassadors Liu Yifei, Wu Lei, Jolin Tsai and actress Carina Lau.
