Dakorien Moore or a mountain goat; Jesse Legree wins Week 1 award

Week 1 of the college football season got off to an interesting start. And not to toot my own horn here, but there was a lot that was predicted on 'West Coast Biased.' Dave Bartoo and I went 3-for-3 on our line picks - Oregon State, Boise State and Louisville - and also highlighted a few major things to watch that came true: Oregon State's lackluster running attack Jesse Legree being a breakout star(article, not podcast) Oregon's disjointed offense early and potential struggles with the Broncos Washington having a great defense, but maybe a mediocre offense And more… But there were a few things I didn't expect, including a Dakorien Moore moment that compared to a viral social media clip. Moore's stop-and-go touchdown against Boise State sure looked an awful lot like a viral nature clip about the importance of speed/awareness: Same-sies! At Oregon State, the record (0-1) may look the same as last year's start, but the results were quite different. The Beavers threw the ball effectively with sophomore quarterback Braden Atkinson, were largely in the right spots defensively and had a solid day on special teams. But the most encouraging performance came from true freshman wide receiver Jesse Legree, who was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after racking up 136 yards and a touchdown, highlighted by a 71-yard catch-and-run early in the contest. Legree, who hails from St. Frances Academy (Maryland) in the talent-rich DMV, will certainly be used as a recruiting chip going forward. 'Come out West,' the message will read. 'You can be a star early.' Capitalizing on that momentum, Oregon State general manager Eron Hodges used the showing to make a statement on social media. 'We got mad love for the DMV out here in Corvallis, OR,' he posted. We're already seeing the impact of quality evaluation/good recruiting, as many of JaMarcus Shephard's newcomers flashed upside during Saturday's encouraging loss. /photo/1 This Substack is reader-supported.
