6 children forced into begging rescued in Punjab's Hoshiarpur

Hoshiarpur (Punjab), Sep 8 (PTI) Six children were rescued by an anti-child begging task force from several places in this district, officials said on Tuesday. The rescues were made during checks carried out on September 5 and 8 under Project Jeevanjot, as per the guidelines of the Punjab Social Security and Women and Child Development Department, they said. The task force, led by District Child Protection Officer Harpreet Kaur, conducted checks near Hanuman Temple and Shani Temple, and at Food Street in Hoshiarpur city, besides the main market and bus stand in Dasuya. One child forced into begging was rescued near Shani Temple and five others from the main Sabzi Mandi, officials said. All six were produced before the Child Welfare Committee, which counselled them and ordered their admission to a children's home. The child protection officer appealed to people to call Child Helpline if they come across any child begging or engaged in child labour. The officer said information about various schemes and services being run by the Punjab government for children aged up to 18 could be obtained from the District Child Protection Unit, Hoshiarpur, or Child Helpline 1098.
