Lonnie Bunch, the head of the Smithsonian Institution, announced his retirement after a months-long battle with the Trump administration over exhibitions. Bunch will depart at the end of the year, after nearly 50 years at the Smithsonian, according to reports on Tuesday. 'For, I don't know, 45 years, work has taken precedence over family, and I just said at 73, enough's enough,' Bunch told The Washington Post . 'There's never a good time, but I think the key is I want to be able to have as many years as I can with the family and the grandkids.' Last year, President Donald Trump put out a laundry list of complaints against the institution, and demanded a 'comprehensive internal review' of the exhibitions on display at all eight Smithsonian museums. The letter specifically cited Trump's directive to 'celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions.' In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump attacked the museums in D.C. as 'OUT OF CONTROL' and the 'last remaining segment of woke. The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was,' he wrote at the time, adding, 'This Country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE.' While he maintained that the departure had nothing to do with any pressure from the White House, Bunch admitted to The New York Times , 'I have to be honest, it has been stressful.
