Advocates urge pause on barred owl killings through ‘Hoot Don't Shoot' campaign

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The U.S. Fish and Wildfire Service is pursuing a plan to cull thousands of barred owls saying the species is threatening the northern spotted owl. The two owl species are prominent in forests throughout the Pacific Northwest. Animal rights advocacy groups are now urging federal officials to pump the brakes on the barred owl killings, with the Center For A Humane Economy suing to stop the plan. The nonprofit's president Wayne Pacelle joined us on AM Extra to tell us about a new billboard campaign called 'Hoot Don't Shoot,' and why they think the government's plan is going too far.
