Pims fire death toll rises to 15 after newborn dies

The death toll from the Pims nursery fire has risen to 15 after the only surviving newborn died during treatment. The baby, Aizal, had survived the initial blaze after nurse Razia Noreen rescued her. Her father said she was premature and remained in critical condition for several days. The fire broke out in the nursery of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, where 15 newborns were present. Fourteen babies died at the scene, while Aizal initially survived the tragedy. She later succumbed to complications after receiving treatment. Meanwhile, authorities have started disciplinary proceedings against six Pims officials over the fire. The officials have received charge sheets containing allegations related to fire safety, administration and supervision. They have 14 days to submit their written responses. Executive Director Dr Imran Sikandar faces allegations of failing to ensure fire safety and proper administrative oversight. Authorities accused him of not conducting fire drills between January and August 2026. He also allegedly failed to implement safety measures at the Mother and Child Hospital despite available funds. Dr Aneza Jalil allegedly retained the administrative position of Deputy Executive Director unlawfully. Authorities also accused her of delaying notification of the fire emergency by 16 minutes. Dr Nighat Nawaz faces allegations of being absent on the night of the incident. Dr Saadia Riaz allegedly failed to ensure staff availability and proper supervision. Muhammad Usman faces allegations of unauthorised absence and failing to ensure firefighting equipment, emergency exits and security staff training. Joint Executive Director Waris Ali Raza also faces allegations of inadequate supervision of security, engineering, maintenance and fire safety. The officials could face major disciplinary penalties, including dismissal from service. Their written responses will determine the next steps in the proceedings.
