‘Please give us electricity': Class 2 girl appeals to Sitapur DM

Lucknow : A Class 2 student has made an emotional appeal to the Sitapur district administration, seeking electricity at her home and a proper road in her locality, claiming that residents have been living without power for nearly seven years. Eight-year-old Ayat Fatima, a student of Don Bosco Inter College, recorded a video while on her way to school and directly appealed to the district magistrate for help. In the video, she reportedly broke down while describing the problems faced by her family and other residents of the locality. Ayat lives with her family in Adarsh Nagar, Behta Chhawani, Mahmudabad. According to her, the locality has been without a proper electricity supply for around seven years. Her father, Zubair, an auto-rickshaw driver, got the house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in the neighbourhood, which is home to approximately 12 families. According to locals, only one family in the entire locality has an electricity connection, leaving the other households without a regular power supply. Zubair said the family had approached the electricity department seeking a connection but was reportedly asked to pay Rs 60,000 for it. He said the amount was difficult for financially weaker families to arrange and had become a major hurdle in getting electricity connections. Ayat's video has since circulated widely on social media, drawing attention to the basic infrastructure problems faced by residents of the locality. However, the electricity department has clarified that the area in question is a plotted development and that electricity connections will be issued to applicants after they make the prescribed payment under the Rs 71.50 per square foot scheme. In a communication addressed to the DM, the electricity department said applicants would be eligible to receive electricity connections after completing the required payment formalities under the scheme.
