Education Must Help Us Practice Democracy—not Merely Study It

Democracy cannot be sustained by teaching its history alone. People also need opportunities to practice the habits that democratic life requires: listening, questioning, ethical judgment, cooperation, reflection, and respectful disagreement. In this opening conversation from Thrive 2026, Dr. Howard Gardner and Andrew Gardner consider how education must evolve during a period of rising authoritarianism, artificial intelligence, relentless information, and weakened trust. Their discussion begins with the Good Work framework and its three essential components: excellence, engagement, and ethics. Ethical citizenship requires more than knowing the correct answer. Gardner's six-part process—define, discuss, debate, deliberate, decide, and debrief—offers educators and communities a practical way to examine difficult dilemmas without pretending that every problem has a simple solution. The conversation also raises a crucial question for the age of AI: If machines increasingly perform traditional knowledge work, what must remain distinctly human? The Gardners point toward relationships, self-understanding, embodied experience, ethical responsibility, and the ability to compete while still cooperating for the common good.
