PHA Lahore, WWF to launch water conservation project

LAHORE - The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Lahore and the WWF have decided to launch water conservation and environment-friendly projects under a public-private partnership. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by PHA Lahore Managing Director Ahmed Usman Javed. A WWF team led by Sohail Naqvi also attended the meeting. During the meeting, the PHA managing director said the two organisations would jointly work on projects aimed at conserving water, improving groundwater levels and promoting urban forestry. Under the collaboration, four recharge wells would be constructed at different locations in Lahore with WWF's support to conserve rainwater and excess water and help replenish groundwater. It was also decided to establish an urban forest over four kanals of land in collaboration with WWF to improve the urban environment and help control pollution. The meeting further decided to recycle used water at the Jinnah Bagh Jamia Mosque and make it suitable for irrigation of plants and trees. Ahmed Usman Javed directed the concerned officers to immediately identify suitable sites for the construction of recharge wells and plantation projects. Addressing the meeting, the PHA Lahore managing director said the authority wanted to start work on these projects at the earliest and asked WWF to complete the planning process soon.
