Five Hospitals In Pilot The German delegation, led by Integromed Germany Managing Director Dr. Suleiman Ibrahim, was received by Governor Hope Uzodimma at the Government House in Owerri on Monday. The initial programme will focus on five hospitals, with the team expected to assess and improve operational structures, streamline processes and strengthen the skills of local healthcare workers. The specialists include doctors and nurses with expertise in paediatrics, general practice, anaesthesiology, intensive care and internal medicine. From Equipment To Expertise Uzodimma said the state's investment in medical infrastructure must be matched by strong professional management and technical expertise. 'Professional operational management remains crucial to achieving the desired outcomes,' the governor said. Under the partnership, German specialists will provide technical support and capacity building to the Heartland Hospital Management Corporation, including specialised training for medical personnel, doctors and clinical trainers. Uzodimma said the longer-term objective is to move beyond importing sophisticated medical technology toward developing the capacity to manufacture medical equipment within Imo. Medical Tourism In Focus The partnership comes as Imo seeks to position itself as a destination for specialised healthcare and reduce the need for residents to travel outside the state for complex procedures. The recently established robotics and oncology centre has already positioned Imo as one of the Nigerian states investing in advanced surgical and cancer-care infrastructure. The first robotic-assisted procedure was performed at the centre in August, led by UK-based consultant robotic and laparoscopic surgeon Professor Kingsley Ekwueme. The state has said the broader hospital upgrade is intended to combine advanced technology with specialist expertise and local capacity development. Germany Partnership Targets Knowledge Transfer Ibrahim said Integromed's objective was to establish a long-term partnership rather than simply deliver individual projects. 'We are here for a long-lasting partnership between the Germany healthcare system and Imo State to leverage quality and services,' he said. A member of the delegation, Dr. Delonger, said the programme would focus on developing solutions jointly with local healthcare professionals rather than simply importing foreign models. 'Our goal is not simply to bring solutions from Germany, but to work together, share knowledge, and develop sustainable solutions that meet the specific needs of the people of Imo State,' he said.
