Why Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has baseball on mind when trying to stop Julio Jones, A.J. Brown clone Jeremiah Smith

Texas and Steve Sarkisian have a massive defensive task ahead, trying to stop Ohio State star Jeremiah Smith. Texas football opened up with a massive 59-7 win over Texas State in Week 1. Now, Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns have a much more difficult test upcoming: Ohio State and Jeremish Smith. Smith was dominant for Ohio State in Week 1, scoring two touchdowns in the first half against Ball State. Now, Sarkisian is addressing how to attack one of the best receivers in college football, per Patrick Murphy of BuckNuts. 'Well, I mean, I think, one, he garners your attention. And he deserves our attention. He's arguably the best player in college football. And the challenge is with him, it's the size, speed, catch radius. He's a big physical guy who can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. And it doesn't always look like it, but it almost feels like it. Like you can feel his presence on the field,' Sarkisian said. Article Continues Below Texas did a good job of slowing down Smith last season. Smith brought in six receptions, but for just 43 yards, and he did not score. Sarkisian used a baseball metaphor to explain how to stop Smith. 'When you just talk about body structure, this guy looks like Julio Jones. This guy looks like AJ Brown, like physically. And he can cover ground. And then because he's so strong, 50-50 catches are very difficult with him. And so, you have to have a plan. But I think like anything, when you have a plan against somebody like him, you can't just throw all fastballs. Even as good of a fastball as you have, if that's all you got, sooner or later they're going to hit it,' Sark added. 'So we've got to be able to mix our pitches up and how we defend him and how we defend the scheme. Because Arthur and Ryan, they believe in running the ball and they've got a good runner and a good O-line. They've got other weapons. And so we've got to be diligent in having our ability to throw different pitches and then be sound in the back end to make sure that we're aware of where No. 4 is. And he garners that.' Texas and Ohio State are two of the best teams in the nation. They kick off at 7:30 pm ET on Saturday.
