SKNDF Coast Guard Strengthens Maritime Monitoring Across Federation

- Advertisement - Basseterre, St. Kitts (September 7, 2026) The maritime monitoring capabilities of St. Kitts and Nevis are being strengthened with the addition of three SOFAR Spotter marine-monitoring buoys, equipment that will provide valuable near-real-time information on changing conditions at sea. According to the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force Coast Guard, the three buoys were recently handed over to the Federation through a regional initiative led by the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology. The technology will monitor wave conditions, atmospheric pressure and sea-surface temperatures, while one of the three buoys is also equipped to record temperatures at varying depths. Two of the buoys will be deployed around St. Kitts, with the remaining unit designated for Nevis. Together, the system is expected to strengthen the Federation's ability to track changing marine conditions and enhance early warning capabilities. Beyond monitoring, the data will support a range of national priorities, including maritime safety, emergency response, fisheries, research and coastal planning. The Coast Guard said it will work alongside national stakeholders to ensure the responsible deployment, monitoring and protection of the buoys as the Federation continues to strengthen its maritime domain awareness.
