Houston man charged with murder after mother's body found in duffel bag

Lucio Vasquez / Houston Public Media A Houston man has been charged with murder several days after his mother's body was allegedly found in a duffel bag, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Arman Malik, 34, has been charged with murder and tampering/fabricating physical evidence, according to Harris County court documents. Investigators accuse Malik of allegedly killing his mother, Dyna Sorto De Malik, and attempting to conceal her body in a duffel bag. At approximately 10 p.m. on Sept. 1, HCSO homicide investigators responded to a report of a possible murder after deputies discovered a deceased body inside a residence while conducting a welfare check at a home on Valley Knoll Drive in West Houston. According to court documents, a family member had requested a welfare check after not hearing from Malik or his mother, who allegedly lived together. Deputies said that they found Malik asleep in a bedroom after forcibly entering the property. Deputies allegedly had difficulty waking Malik, and he was later transported to a hospital, according to court documents. On Sept. 2, deputies conducted a search warrant on the property and transported the body to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science, where the body was allegedly identified as Malik's mother. Malik was charged with tampering with evidence on Sept. 4 and later charged with murder on Tuesday. As of Tuesday, Malik had not yet been appointed a public defender.
