Maryville College presented its 2026 Distinguished Service Award to Dr. John Nichols (1965) during a breakfast Aug. 18 in the Proffitt Dining Room. The award was highlighted later that day during the college's Convocation ceremony, which officially marked the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year. Selected by representatives of the Maryville College Alumni Association, the Distinguished Service Award honors an alumnus or alumna who has dedicated themselves to great service that benefits the greater good and honors Maryville College, or who has rendered unusual service in any capacity on behalf of the College.Nichols joined the faculty in 1967 and served until his retirement in 2012. He taught in and chaired the Division of Mathematics and Computer Science. During Convocation, Maryville College President Bryan F. Coker recognized Nichols' longtime connection to the college, which began when he arrived as an undergraduate.
