Three Biggest Questions Timberwolves Must Answer Before 2026-27 Season

The Minnesota Timberwolves are looking for ways to get over the hump after failing to make the Conference Finals for a third straight season this past year, falling in the second round to the San Antonio Spurs in six games. Minnesota revamped their team in the offseason, trading Julius Randle and Naz Reid, but acquiring LaMelo Ball. They rounded out their starting lineup by signing Jonathan Kuminga deeper into the free agency period to be the starting power forward. With a new energy and new expectations on the team, what are the three questions that the Timberwolves need to answer before the season starts? The Timberwolves have Jonathan Kuminga, Rudy Gobert, Trey Lyles, and Joan Beringer as their top four in the frontcourt. If one of them goes down, especially if it's one of the two starters, that depth is going to be very tested. Lyles returns to the NBA after a year in the EuroLeague, where he transformed himself into a stretch shooter. Beringer is going into his sophomore season with limited rookie experience. The team might explore ways of adding another frontcourt option, either through trade or a low-cost free agent. On paper, this is a team that should play much faster than the previous version. Four of the five starters are strong transition players who can push the ball and get to the rim. Gobert isn't going to run in transition, but he can rebound and immediately get the ball to one of the playmakers. Gone should be the days of Randle trying to play bully ball. All the pieces are there for them to play an up-tempo game where their offense overwhelms defenses that aren't set and on the same page. It's up to them to execute that style. McDaniels is obviously an important piece to the team, but while it looked like he was going to enter the season as the number two option above Randle, he's back to being the number three option behind LaMelo. McDaniels has more to offer than just being a three-and-D player, and the Timberwolves should continue to let him explore his creator ability, whether he's getting his own shot or creating for others. If McDaniels is still able to put together a breakout season, the Timberwolves are going to be a handful in the West.
