Should you upgrade to new Apple iMac M6?
Apple says its new iMac runs on-device AI up to 5x faster than the M4 model and up to 12x faster than the M1 version in LM Studio prompt processing. Those are Apple's own benchmarks, so treat them as claims until independent tests land.
The iMac M6 keeps the 24-inch design and seven colours (blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange and silver). Pre-orders open October 28 in 35 countries and regions, including the US, with deliveries from Friday, November 6.
iMac M6 performance: what Apple claims
The CPU contains up to 12 cores and the GPU is available in up to 12 cores, an increase of two cores on both ends. All GPU cores come with Neural Accelerators, and memory bandwidth amounts to 170 GB/s.
When compared to the M4 iMac, Apple offers 1.5 times faster application performance, such as in Microsoft Excel, twice as many photo-editing graphics, and double ray-traced gaming. The comparison with the M1 iMac reveals 2.5 times faster applications in Microsoft Excel and 3.3 times faster apps in Affinity. In case you have an Intel iMac, Apple provides 18 times faster speed.
Siri AI and macOS 27 Golden Gate
The iMac comes with macOS 27 that supports Siri AI. The AI resides in Spotlight and searches through your messages, emails and photos, acts across apps. There is a dedicated keyboard shortcut allowing you to ask about anything shown on your screen. In Mail and Messages, Siri uses your voice, mannerism and tone of voice.
The Safari browser provides for topic-based tab grouping, restock and price drop alerts, custom extensions made from a description. You can now adjust Liquid Glass from being completely clear to completely tinted.
You get Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and optional 2.5Gb Ethernet, which Apple says is up to 2.5x faster than before. SSD speeds are up to 2x faster. Up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports can drive two 6K external displays.
The 24-inch 4.5K Retina display (500 nits), 12MP Center Stage camera, Desk View and Dolby Atmos speaker system carry over. So do the colour-matched Magic accessories, including a Touch ID keyboard.
iMac M6 price and release date
The 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU model starts at $1,499, or $1,449 with education pricing. The 12-core model starts at $1,699, or $1,599 for education. Apple Upgrade leases start at $28.99 a month for 36 months.
