File photo The government has proposed an indicative wheat price of Rs. 4,500 per maund for 2027, an increase of Rs. 1,000 from last year's level, as the government seeks to encourage cultivation, protect farmers' incomes and strengthen food security. In a statement, the Prime Minister's Office said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had said the proposed price aimed to provide relief to farmers facing higher production costs, rising petroleum prices and inflationary pressures. The government expects the higher indicative price to help farmers recover cultivation costs and earn reasonable profits, encouraging them to expand wheat planting and boost domestic production in the next season. Sharif said Pakistan had faced financial difficulties in the agricultural sector in recent years because of inflation and rising input costs. The country had also been required to import wheat during the past two years, underscoring the need to strengthen local production. The prime minister said the decision was aimed at improving food security, encouraging domestic wheat production and bringing greater stability to the agricultural sector. He acknowledged the guidance of President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, as well as consultations with the chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh. The government expects the proposed price to encourage farmers to devote more land to wheat cultivation, increasing the likelihood of a stronger sowing season and higher domestic output in 2027. The indicative price is part of the government's broader effort to improve farmers' economic conditions, stabilize the agricultural economy and reduce Pakistan's reliance on imported wheat.
