Iran Captures an American Submarine in the Strait of Hormuz

The system has a modular architecture and can be equipped with various sensors and equipment depending on the type of mission. Among its stated uses are subsurface reconnaissance, surveillance, and intelligence gathering, seabed mapping, countering naval mines, anti-submarine warfare, and inspecting underwater cables and pipelines. The claim about the US use of this system is also consistent with the information available about the country's naval programs. Anduril delivered its first Dive-LD to the US Navy in April 2025. The system was delivered to the US Navy's Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Squadron 1 (UUVRON-1), a unit that develops and employs unmanned subsurface systems. US Navy images and reports have also previously shown the presence of Dive-LD in the force's experimental programs. In April 2025, the US Defense Innovation Unit also issued a call for applications for the development of unmanned subsurface systems capable of carrying larger payloads. The seizure of this sub comes at a time when the Strait of Hormuz has become one of the main hotbeds of military confrontation between Iran and the United States in recent months, and the activity of surface and subsurface unmanned systems in the region has increased.
