Funeral of Tanzanian president's husband held in Zanzibar Funeral of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, took place in Zanzibar on 7 September. He passed away that morning at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar at the age of 80 due to a heart condition, according to a press release from the office of the vice-president of Tanzania. The burial ceremony took place in the village of Kizimkazi in the Southern Unguja region. The funeral prayer was led by the Grand Mufti of Zanzibar, Sheikh Saleh Omar Kaabi. The funeral was attended by vice-president of Tanzania Deogratius Ndejembi; President of Zanzibar Hussein Ali Mwinyi; and Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba; as well as former leaders of the country, including the fourth President, Jakaya Kikwete, and former presidents of Zanzibar. President of Zanzibar Hussein Ali Mwinyi also sent his condolences and 'prayers for patience and strength for the president'. Hafidh Ameir Hassan was a lecturer in agricultural sciences. He became Tanzania's First Gentleman in 2021 when his wife took office as president. The couple had been married since 1978. They have four children – three sons and a daughter, Vanu Hafidh Ameir, who is a member of the Zanzibar Parliament. African Initiative | Subscribe
