Does Harry Shum Jr.'s role on 'DWTS' hint at his future on 'Grey's Anatomy'?

Harry Shum Jr. has starred as Blue on Grey's Anatomy since season 19 in 2022. News broke on Wednesday that he'll now appear on another ABC show — Dancing With the Stars. So what does that mean for his future at Grey Sloan? Has Dr. Benson 'Blue' Kwan checked out of Grey Sloan Memorial — and into the ballroom — for good? 'I don't know,' Harry Shum Jr. admits to Entertainment Weekly after Wednesday's season 35 Dancing With the Stars cast reveal. 'We're trying to work it out… I mean, Blue was fired, so we'll see if he gets back and how that happens.' May's finale of Grey's Anatomy revealed Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) had discovered that Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) was covering up for Blue after he gave a liver cancer patient an experimental treatment that was not approved by the FDA. Blue certainly isn't the first doctor at Grey Sloan to ignore protocol and ultimately get reinstated, which Shum Jr. acknowledges. 'A lot of people have been fired on the show, so it's the interesting part to see if they can get their jobs back,' he adds. Over the years, more and more Grey's Anatomy series regulars have shifted into recurring roles, with Caterina Scorsone (Dr. Amelia Shepherd) taking an extended hiatus last season. Reports have indicated budget cuts are behind the decision. Shum Jr. isn't the only season 35 cast member who is part of another ABC show. Jenna Dewan stars as firefighter Bailey Nune on The Rookie . Dewan, however, makes it clear that she isn't going anywhere when asked by EW about pulling double duty. 'They're being so awesome!' she says of The Rookie team. 'They're really truly giving me the space to do this because they love that I get this moment. I'm doing both.' As for how she will balance it all, she quips, 'Ask me [when] this is all over. I'll be like, 'This is great. I'm fine. I didn't sleep. It was fine!'' Dewan and Shum Jr. are actually paired with spouses Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson, respectively, on DWTS . Both actors also have past dance experience, with Dewan touring as a backup dancer for Janet Jackson and starring in the 2006 movie Step Up , and Shum Jr. touring with Jennifer Lopez and appearing on Glee . While some fans have been vocal with feelings about their castings being unfair, Chmerkovskiy defended the decision to EW. 'First of all, it's naive to think that this show is just about dance,' he says. 'It's about the human experience and the human journey and how much you're willing to reveal yourself. Dance is a vehicle for us to find out more about these people — and I think that's our advantage. 'Forget the dancing part. My advantage is that I'm partnered with an incredible human being that I'm excited to showcase and tell stories with and share space with and celebrate as a woman, as a mother, as someone that gets a chance to do what they love again. That's what I think our advantages are. And I'm excited to celebrate that, hopefully for as long as people are willing to vote for us.' 'As a dancer and as someone that looks at Jenna as somebody that's so iconic in our world, [I look at it like she] paved certain ways — a lot of dancers dream about transitioning into acting and performing beyond the dance floor,' he says. 'She did that and she did that so gracefully. What a treat for me after 22 seasons to be able to get a partner like that.' The cast of DWTS season 35 also includes Julia Stiles, Tatyana Ali, Tyler Cameron, Giada De Laurentiis, Maura Higgins, Ciara Miller, Taylor Hanson, Sarah Jane Nader, Guillermo Rodriguez, Jackson Olson, Ezra Frech, Amber Glenn, Conner Leavitt, and Connor Wood.
