One dead and more than a dozen injured after bus and car collide in Waterford

One person has died after a collision between a bus and a car on the Cork-Waterford border which left over a dozen other people injured. It marked a grim weekend on Irish roads with four people dying in separate collisions in Waterford, Wexford, Limerick and Meath. The fatal tragedies brings to 138 the number of people who have died on Irish roads this year – over 11pc higher than for the same period last year. The Waterford collision occurred shortly before 8pm when a car and a coach collided on the N25 Youghal to Dungarvan road, near Piltown. It is understood to have been a head-on collision with major damage sustained by the car. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene before they could be rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH). Over a dozen people travelling on the bus were injured. Most of the injured were treated at the scene though it is understood a number have been referred to hospital for precautionary assessment. The collision prompted a major emergency services response with almost a dozen ambulances, Garda and fire brigade units in attendance from both Dungarvan and Youghal. The N25 was closed to facilitate the work of the emergency services. Collision scene investigators will examine and photograph the scene before the road can be re-opened. It is expected that the road will remain closed for some time and drivers were urged to plan alternative routes given that diversions will remain in place. Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to the collision to contact them to assist their investigation. Officers are particularly appealing to any drivers who may have been on the N25 between 7pm and 8pm on Sunday evening and whose vehicles are equipped with dash-cameras.
