Google Pixel 10 Pro may be better than Pixel 11 Pro for long-term use

For smartphone buyers planning to keep their device for several years, the newest model is not always the best choice. A recent analysis by MakeUseOf argues that Google's Pixel 10 Pro could be a better long-term option than the newer Pixel 11 Pro, particularly for users who value memory capacity and price over incremental upgrades. The writer, Brandon Miniman, said he considered upgrading from his Pixel 10 Pro to the Pixel 11 Pro but decided against it after comparing the two devices. The Pixel 11 Pro starts at $1,099, $100 more than the Pixel 10 Pro's $999 launch price. Pixel 11 Pro's HiLight feature One of the most notable physical changes on the Pixel 11 Pro is Google's new HiLight feature. The multicoloured programmable LED replaces the temperature sensor found on the previous generation. It is available on the Pixel 11 Pro models but not the standard Pixel 11. HiLight can pulse while users interact with Google's Gemini AI assistant, including when Gemini is listening, processing a request or responding. The LED can also be assigned to favourite contacts, allowing users to associate different colours with specific callers. However, the feature currently has a significant limitation: it works for phone calls but does not extend to text messages or notifications from apps such as WhatsApp. That makes HiLight less compelling as a reason to upgrade, particularly for users who rely more heavily on messaging and app notifications than traditional phone calls. Pixel 11 Pro still brings hardware upgrades The Pixel 11 Pro does offer several improvements over the Pixel 10 Pro. Its display can reach a peak brightness of 3,600 nits, compared with 3,300 nits on the Pixel 10 Pro. It also doubles the base storage from 128GB to 256GB and increases wireless charging from 15W to 25W. The newer phone is powered by Google's Tensor G6 processor, replacing the Tensor G5 in the Pixel 10 Pro. However, the Pixel 11 Pro comes with 12GB of RAM, compared with 16GB on the Pixel 10 Pro. The Pixel 10 Pro could also become more attractive if its price falls following the launch of the newer generation. Ultimately, the better choice depends on how a buyer values the differences between the two phones. For existing Pixel 10 Pro owners, the latest model may offer too few meaningful improvements to make upgrading worthwhile. For someone buying a Pixel specifically to keep it for several years, however, the combination of lower launch pricing and 16GB of RAM could make the Pixel 10 Pro an appealing long-term option.
