Windows 11 set for faster startup, better 8GB RAM performance

Microsoft is working on improvements to Windows 11 aimed at reducing boot times and improving performance on computers equipped with 8GB of RAM, a company executive has confirmed. Microsoft Corporate Vice President of Windows and Devices Mark Linton made the comments during the IFA 2026 technology trade show in Berlin, although he did not provide specific performance figures, targets or a release date for the changes. Linton said Microsoft had made 'significant gains' in areas including boot times and Windows Hello responsiveness. Windows 11 can currently take several seconds to reach the desktop after startup, even on computers equipped with modern M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDs. Microsoft targets 8GB RAM performance Linton also confirmed that Microsoft is working to make Windows 11 run more efficiently on systems with 8GB of memory. 'We're optimizing so that 8 gig of RAM runs great on machines as well,' he said. The focus comes as more entry-level and mid-range laptops are being offered with 8GB of RAM as manufacturers face higher memory costs and supply pressures. Windows chief Pavan Davuluri had previously identified memory optimization as one of Microsoft's priorities for Windows through the end of 2026. Davuluri said the company was working to reduce Windows' memory footprint and deliver a faster and more responsive experience across PCs. Windows 11 memory usage under scrutiny The push to improve memory efficiency follows concerns over how much RAM Windows 11 can consume shortly after startup. A test of a Dell XPS 13 with 8GB of RAM found that Windows 11 was using roughly 70% of available memory before an application or browser tab was opened. Other tests have highlighted differences in how operating systems handle limited memory, although performance can vary significantly depending on hardware and software configurations. No update available yet Microsoft has not released a Windows 11 update containing the newly announced boot-time and memory improvements. The changes are currently limited to internal builds and have not yet reached the public preview channels of the Windows Insider Program. Microsoft is expected to continue rolling out Windows 11 improvements through its phased update process. The Windows 11 version 26H2 feature update entered the Release Preview Channel on August 27, ahead of a wider rollout expected later this year.
