Illinois schools secure state funds to hire teachers

A handful of school districts in Boone, Ogle and Winnebago counties will share state funding aimed at helping schools recruit and retain teachers amid ongoing educator shortages in Illinois. The Illinois State Board of Education selected 100 districts for Fiscal Year 2027 Teacher Vacancy Grant awards, according to a community announcement. The state is investing $15 million through the program, targeting districts that reported some of the highest numbers of unfilled teaching positions and meet eligibility requirements tied to Illinois' Evidence-Based Funding formula. Gov. JB Pritzker said the grants will help districts with the most significant staffing challenges attract and keep educators. "Illinois is ensuring students have access to excellent teachers and strong learning environments," Pritzker said. "These grants will help school districts facing the most significant staffing challenges recruit and retain the educators students need to succeed. We remain committed to strengthening the educator pipeline and supporting schools across our state." The program was launched in 2023 and has directed $120 million to school districts statewide. ISBE said participating districts have used funding for teacher signing bonuses, retention incentives, tuition reimbursement, mentoring programs, special education teacher supports, classroom resources and other efforts designed to improve recruitment and retention.
