Extra checks for electors over 25 years of age filling voter enrolment form

Voters checking the electoral roll Pune: Voters over 25 years seeking inclusion in the electoral roll will face additional scrutiny. Electoral officials have been directed to verify their previous enrolment details and residential addresses before deciding their claims, state chief electoral officer told TOI on Monday. The directions were issued by his office while officials were told how they could dispose of claims and objections received during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Applicants above 25 years of age will have to provide their full residential address and EPIC number and officials will run checks against the electoral rolls to ascertain whether the applicant is enrolled elsewhere. If that is the case, officials will inform the person that multiple enrolment is against the law and advise them to delete their name from one location. The directive also specifically deals with voters in the absent, shifted, dead, duplicate and others category. Such voters can submit Form 6 to seek inclusion. Such voters will have to only provide their EPIC to check their status. Officials will check ASDDO voters' previous electoral roll entry and EPIC details. If the voter's name is found in the roll elsewhere, the claim will be dealt with accordingly and the voter will not be in more than one location. The directions come as electoral authorities begin looking at claims and objections filed after the publication of the draft rolls under SIR. Claims cannot be disposed of mechanically and registration officers can ask claimants or objectors to appear personally and seek evidence where necessary. The CEO's office has told officials to ensure that applications for inclusion, correction and deletion are well scrutinised, especially in cases involving discrepancies in mapping and previous electoral records. The focus on voters above 25 is significant as it means a person seeking first-time inclusion at an older age is likely to undergo a more detailed check of their electoral history, rather than simply being added to the roll on the basis of the claim, officials added. Applicants seeking inclusion should provide the declaration and supporting details, while officials must ensure that the final electoral roll is accurate and free of duplicate entries, the orders said.
