A crash on U.S. 93 north of Wells turned deadly on Wednesday, Sept. 2, when a White Subaru Crosstrek crossed the centerline and collided with a commercial vehicle with a trailer.
Troopers with the Nevada Highway Patrol Division responded to the crash at about 3:19 p.m. near Elko County mile marker 111, about 36 miles north of Wells, according to Nevada State Police.
The preliminary investigation found the Subaru was traveling southbound when it crossed into the northbound lane. The driver of the northbound commercial vehicle with a trailer steered left in an attempt to avoid the Subaru, but the vehicles collided.
The Subaru left the roadway and caught fire. Its driver, 93-year-old Richard Arthur Winter, of Butte, Montana, sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the commercial vehicle was not injured.
